Social Media in the Public Sphere

Social Media is the best and worth thing that has happened to our public sphere. Many people can argue that this generation of people continuously being obsessed with any type of social media that happens through the internet is helping our society with the way we run our lives and businesses, but at the same time it is hurting us as people who are not longer spending time with real people and just talking to our cyber buddies. Currently these social media platforms help us extend our lives to people from all over the world, but while we are focusing on our long lost friends from high school, people are focusing less on the people around them. It seems like people are always looking for someone else to speak with. It is not enough that one can be sitting chatting with a friend at a coffee shop, each one of them is constantly checking facebook, twitter, google+, etc. because they are looking to hear from everyone else.
This new type of social media has created a whole new world of jobs, entrepreneurs and brings to light events and products to the forefront of society. But how far is this going to go, and how is it going to help out society if all we continue to do with our lives is sit behind a computer or an iPhone twenty-four-hours a day. People are going to lose track of what is really important in their actual lives, and start to put more importance on their cyber world.
