Information Overload

In our society today, technology is absolutely unavoidable.  Even the most basic communication requires the use of social media—just try and think of the last time that you haven’t started your day by checking your facebook, email, blog, etc.  We simply can’t get away from it.

In itself, our use of these media borders on complete dependency.  However, there is another dimension to the process and practice of online communication.  With every word posted, you are becoming part of an infinite archive of publicly accessible thoughts and ideas.  Memories are made instantly and carelessly, as every action you take can be documented, posted, and provided with commentary from both yourself and others, whether that action is of any significance or not.  The public sphere has massively expanded as each member of our society takes to their blog to voice their personal take on the latest current events.  Whether this is an accurate opinion or a completely skewed meltdown is irrelevant.  At times, it even seems that the ideas that gain the most publicity are inaccurate, biased, or sometimes just completely insane.  The sheer quantity of information that is out there means we have to scream to be heard. And the sad truth of the matter is that a loud mistake will usually go a lot further than a quiet truth.
