The Age of Social Media
In today's world, social media reigns. It has become fused with all aspects of what is public in our society. As individuals we promote ourselves, as consumers we are fed advertisement, and as creators we depend on social awareness to spread our work. This faced paced world of online media means that we process faster, spread faster, and respond faster. While this means a great increase in the distance something can be made public, it also means that there is less editing than before with printed media. When an idea can instantly be made public with the click of a button, there is less concern for the value of that idea. In addition, the role of the publisher is passed to anyone with a computer and the skills to handle online processing. What is polished and curated by a large scale company now is placed at the same level of your 13 year old teenage neighbor on her laptop. There are advantages to this type of quick and large spread public action, but it must be taken with a grain of salt because of the inconsistent quality that arises.
